Formerly identical except for the design, LG's C and G ranges derive from this year since the LG G1 is indeed the only one to benefit from the brand new generation of the manufacturer's EVO panel. The "G" is there for "Gallery" and we must admit that the G1 is above all intended to be hung on the wall, with an ultra-sleek design and successful cable management. It is possible to use these feet, but these are delivered as an option, the wall support is however provided.

It remained to be seen what the new slab had in store. Its main promise: better brightness, the usual weak point of OLED technology. And the contract is actually fulfilled with an increase of nearly 15% on this point. However, we have not yet reached the heights of Panasonic OLED TVs. The colors are almost perfect without surprises and we find the usual excellence of LG in terms of gaming.

Not surprisingly, the LG range It remains at the top of the OLED TV hierarchy or not. The changes between the CX of 2020 and the C1 released at the start of 2021 are more than minor. The Korean has reserved its new OLED panels for its G1 range which we will not fail to test in due time.

LG C1 (2021)

The design does not change and therefore remains as successful as ever. The panel also remains unchanged and we are therefore entitled to perfectly calibrated colors and perfect blacks. Only the brightness peak simply remains "correct". Gamers will once again be delighted, with a very responsive screen accompanied by HDMI 2.1 compatibility as well as G-Sync support for PC gamers. A new menu dedicated to the game also accompanies the new version of the operating system.

WebOS is now in version 6.0 and adopts a new interface that gives pride of place to content, bringing together the various streaming services on the same page. More amazing is the native support for the Google Stadia game streaming service. Among the few weaknesses of the LG 65C1, we particularly note a remote control which is still not backlit.

While OLED remains our favorite screen technology, Samsung continues to improve the LCD with its mini LED technology. In addition to much better contrast management, the mini LED makes it possible to significantly refine the screen. The QN95A is only 2.5 cm thick. A tour de force also made possible in part by the OneConnect box which deports all the connections.

Beyond the look, the Mini LED actually makes it possible to significantly improve the contrast ratio, even if we are not yet at the level of OLED. We also notice persistent blooming problems (creating a sort of luminous halo in certain areas), in particular on the subtitles. For once, Samsung delivers a well-calibrated panel right out of the box.

The TV is also very playful with very low input lag, HDMI 2.1 support and even (unofficial) compatibility with Nvidia's G-Sync. Among its few flaws, we note a cheap remote control and a less effective anti-reflective filter than last year.

For lovers of beautiful cinematic images, Panasonic is the reference in the world of the OLED. If the company is supplied like everyone else at LG for its OLED panels, it modifies them heavily, in particular with regard to the backlighting. The JZ1500E series represents the mid-range of the brand and promises, among other things, better brightness.

And we must see that the contract is fulfilled since we measured a score of 880 cd/m². It's even better than the LG G1 and a record for an OLED panel. As always with Pana, the colorimetry impresses, the Delta E in Filmaker mode being only 0.82. Finally, OLED obliges, the contrast is infinite.

The other point on which we expected the manufacturer at the turn was on HDMI 2.1 and the game more particularly. And it does have to be admitted that, with the exception of a 4K 120Hz mode which will arrive with a future update, things are good, even if LG still remains one step ahead for diehard gamers.

If the brand doesn't have the punch of a Samsung or an LG , Philips continues to benefit from an aficionado base, mainly thanks to its Ambilight technology. The latter uses programmable RGB LEDs to create a lighting atmosphere on the wall behind the screen, all with the aim of improving immersion.

For its 2021 vintage, the manufacturer continues to trust OLED by going to LG for supplies. More precisely, we find the same EVO panel as on the G1 series. In practice, this translates into a 20% increase in brightness compared to last year and perfectly calibrated colors. The gaming part has for once been the subject of special attention with a display delay time of only 11 ms.

The sound part stands out from the competition thanks to a sound bar signed Bowers & Wilkins, to which we can add a subwoofer for more punch or satellites for a better surround effect.

But it is above all the Ambilight, present on 4 sides, which will appeal to fans of technology. If third-party solutions exist, we must admit that Philips remains the best for this kind of illumination.

TCL 65C825The micro LED for everyone

Although the technology is mainly driven by Samsung, a few other players are trying their hand at QLED. This is the case of TCL, which gives us here a rather pretty and technically attractive television. Among its particularities, we note the possibility of adding a webcam to make video calls via Google Duo.

Designed by TCL, the panel uses a quantum dot panel accompanied by a mini LED backlight. If the infinite blacks of OLED are not achieved, the contrast is fantastic for an LCD panel. Add to that a brightness exceeding 1000 cd/m² and you will be able to enjoy HDR content in good conditions.

With a Delta E of 2.53, the colorimetry is more than correct, even if there is still a little room for TCL to improve. On the gaming side, the copy is quite average. We are certainly entitled to HDMI 2.1 (VRR included), but the input lag in is a little high and the Freesync / G-Sync are absent subscribers.

Google TV completes the picture on the OS side, with its efficient interface and a complete software offer. If it does not come to revolutionize the market, this TV displays an extremely interesting quality-price ratio, especially if you are looking for a large diagonal. Since Now a few years, Hisense stands out with aggressive value-for-money TVs. This 65U7QF is no exception to the rule, offering a diagonal of 65 inches for 1000 euros.

An aggressive price that does not mean that the display quality is catastrophic, quite the contrary. So the colorimetry is excellent in SDR and quite correct in HDR. In this mode, we also notice a more than respectable peak in brightness at this price level. On the other hand, players will remain unsatisfied, not only is the persistence noticeable, but it does not support the HDMI 2.1 standard either. It is therefore impossible to use the full possibilities of the new consoles. The Vidaa U operating system offers most major streaming apps, but don't count on installing more advanced software like Kodi.

Budget TVs

If you are looking for low-cost proposals, you will be spoiled for choice and there are dozens of brands of unequal quality. We recommend that you trust mainly four brands: Samsung, LG, as well as TCL and Hisense to a lesser extent. Unsurprisingly, these are established manufacturers who manage to transpose their expertise to their entry-level models.

Of course, you will make concessions on image quality and additional features.

What are the important points to look at before buying a television?

Before buying a television, it is important to check several parameters. The first is obviously the diagonal of the screen in order to find the one that will best suit your home. How do I take full advantage of my new console?

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X both bring very interesting technologies such as VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) which limits tearing or ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) which automatically adjusts the TV to reduce latency. They can also run 4K games at up to 120 frames per second. To take advantage of this, however, the television must be HDMI 2.1 compatible. This version of the interface is however for the moment the prerogative of high or mid-range televisions.

Which brands are trusted?

The TV market is made up of many brands, but the historical TV manufacturers are generally those you can trust: Sony, LG, Samsung and Philips in the lead. Some Chinese manufacturers also manage to regularly offer interesting products like TCL.

OLED, QLED, LCD, what are the differences?

Master technology at present, OLED has the particularity of being based on organic LEDs (hence the "O"). These emit their own light, which means that each pixel is lit independently. Conversely, when we want to display black, it is simply turned off and therefore does not emit any light. It is for this reason that the contrasts of OLED are said to be " infinite ". This is the main advantage of the technology, but there are others.

QLED and LCD are from the same family and require additional lighting. The QLED is therefore an LCD screen, but works with the reinforcement of quantum dots (or quantum dots) to obtain better colors and deeper contrast. On the other hand, the technology is more expensive than the classic LCD, so the latter has the advantage of being less expensive. Mini-LED and micro-LED?

Despite a similar name, these two technologies are radically different. The first describes a backlighting method using more LEDs than the classic "Full LED" for more contrast.

Micro-LED is a direct competitor to OLED since each pixel is individually lit, which gives perfect blacks. On paper, the technology also provides better maximum brightness. However, it remains confined to a few ultra high-end models sold for several tens of thousands of euros.
