This group of researchers wants to stop them from secretly spying on you and will launch an application so you can detect surveillance cameras.

A group of researchers at the National University of Singapore is developing a useful tool to detect surveillance cameras hidden in everyday objects, simply using a mobile phone camera.

The project was created in response to the threat posed by hidden surveillance cameras in places such as hotel rooms, bathrooms or vacation rentals, whose use has increased in recent years. While its detection, thanks to advances in technology, has become more and more complicated.

The researchers say that current detection methods for these types of cameras are not enough and that LAPD, or LAPD, could be the solution to this growing problem.?

LAPD is the name of the project that detects hidden surveillance cameras.

While other current camera detection systems rely on specialized equipment and do not reach high detection levels, the LAPD promises to be able to find the exact location of the cameras.

To do this, the system takes advantage of the capabilities of the TOF or time of flight sensors included in the cameras of many current smartphones, including models such as the Galaxy S20 ultra or the Huawei P30 Pro, among others. The application uses these sensors to emit laser signals that, combined with computer vision and automatic learning techniques, can locate the reflections emitted by hidden cameras.

On the basis of the tests carried out, it is assured that LAPD can achieve a detection rate of 88.9% of the surveillance cameras. The operation of the system can be seen in more detail in the video below these lines. All published project documentation can also be accessed.

Although the application has not yet been published, the researchers intend to publish it soon, as well as to make its code open to the public. They also plan to introduce new features to increase the detection rate, such as the ability to use the LED flash on mobiles.
