When you watch catwalks from the 90s, you can see that the humor and the party were there, when the industry was just starting to transform into a formidable business. The video for the song "Too Funky" by George Michael, shot in 1992, undoubtedly represents the pinnacle of this nineties extravaganza. "It was the heyday of fashion," says performance artist Joey Arias, recalling when the music video was made. “Everyone wanted to be those supermodels we saw on the catwalks! ". Or, as George Michael sang, "Everybody wants a lover like that" - understand "Everyone wants that in their bed".

To refresh your memory, we have therefore reconstructed the puzzle of the creation of the video for “Too Funky”, which had nothing to envy to that of “Freedom! 90 ”, which was also looped on MTV and where a string of tops already appeared: Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell and Tatjana Patitz.

A true rallying cry for self-acceptance, the video for “Freedom! 90” made fashion history when it was sung in playback by the models at the Gianni Versace show. “Too Funky”, with Anne Bancroft's voiceover, is less explicit in its lyrics, more allusive. But visually, the clip touches on the baroque, especially compared to the ultra-minimalist set of “Freedom! 90”.

To make the video, George Michael had called on Thierry Mugler, known since as Manfred Thierry Mugler, who left us last week. This ex-dancer became the legend that we know in the world of fashion by creating silhouettes and spectacular and theatrical shows. Estelle Lefébure today describes the creative duo Mugler-Michael as “two masters with very strong personalities and visions”, even if, inevitably, their collaboration turned a little sour. At the end of filming, George Michael was visibly fed up with Mugler, who paid him back.

But fortunately, art ended up triumphing and “Too Funky”, with its implausible costumes and outrageous poses, remains a magical moment that we still never tire of, thirty years later.
