Sam Raimi, the director of the first Spider-Man trilogy, gives his opinion on Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Worker of form and narrator of genius, Sam Raimi signed his first feature film in 1981, the horror film Evil Dead.Immediate success, the filmmaker then tried to different genres such as, among other things, the horrific comedy with Evil Dead 2, the western with death or live, the icy thriller with a simple plan and the superhero film with Darkman.
The director being passionate about comics, he will retry the superheroic experience in 2002 with his first Spider-Man which will install all the codes of superhero cinema which will be sanded by the MCU.And while waiting for the director's comeback, on the one hand behind the camera - since the guy has not signed a feature film since 2013 - but also in the direction of a superhero film, Doctor Strange in theMultiverse of Madness.
Please note, the following contains spoilers on Spider-Man: No Way Home
"I feel that we will still spit on me with a wide screen"
It was also during the promotion of the latter, with Variety, that Sam Raimi gave his opinion on the mastodon of the Spider-Man box office: No Way Home:
"It was very fun. [...] I love No Way Home and the room in which I was in madness. It was delicious to see Alfred resume his role, as well as Willem Dafoe. Just to see theseGuy prolonging what they had started. And Tobey was great, as always. The best word I can use is that it was refreshing. "
Sam Raimi therefore shares the pleasure he had to find the actors he had directed in the trilogy he led from 2002 to 2007. Indeed, we find in the film Jon Watts an Alfred Molina, who makes theMechanical arm of Doctor Octopus, a Willem Dafoe who brings her green jester mask, a Thomas Haden Church who is hiding again under the CGI (ugly, this time) of the sand man and, of course, a Tobey Maguireclothes his Spider-Man costume.
Joy to find Maguire's Spider-Man or sadness to see him tired?
Difficult to say, given the level of crafts of the film, if its creators really like their characters, but it is clear that as long as the spectator loves them unconditionally, the feature film suddenly becomes more appreciable. One can understand the tenderness of the filmmaker to find these known faces, in the same way that the ecstatic joy of the public is understandable.Nevertheless, the observation that the film never seeks to make feel something other than this somewhat easy nostalgia is quite tragic.
But who knows, perhaps that the return of Sam Raimi behind the camera will be able to give us some other emotions, and even jostle us a little.Note, however, that the latest news from the film given by the filmmaker, in the same interview for Variety, have nothing to give us confidence ... Doctor Strange in the Multaveve of Madness will be released in French theaters on May 4.
