With Windows 11, Microsoft has revised the minimum system requirements for its operating system. From January 2023, the computer giant will force manufacturers to integrate an HD webcam on all laptops.
In the wake of the presentation of Windows 11, Microsoft has lifted the veil on the minimum system requirements of the operating system. Unsurprisingly, Windows 11 is more restrictive than its predecessor, Windows 10.
The operating system notably requires that your computer be equipped with a 1 GHz 64-bit dual-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of internal storage and a 9-inch screen. As our colleagues at XDA Developers report, Windows 11 will also require your PC to have a webcam.
According to a support document posted on Microsoft's site shortly after Windows 11 was announced, hardware requirements will include a webcam starting in 2023. “As of January 1, 2023, all device types, including except for desktop computers, must have a front-facing camera,” Microsoft announces. All devices manufactured after this date must comply.
Every laptop, as well as convertibles and all-in-one PCs, will need to be equipped with a user-facing camera. Currently, the rear camera and the front camera are still considered “optional” on laptops.
However, most machines sold on the market are already equipped with a webcam, a tool that has become essential for remote work widespread by the pandemic. Some references, such as the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15, continue to ignore the accessory in order to reduce production costs. Ultimately, Microsoft's requirements could lead to an increase in the price of certain machines.

In the document, Microsoft also details the mandatory technical characteristics of the webcam. Windows 11 requires HD or higher quality, auto exposure, or auto white balance. What do you think of the new requirements of the Redmond firm? Should we impose the webcam on laptops? We are waiting for your opinion.
