P5 Ambilight Android TVComimenta processor
Philips presented this week a first wave of new televisions for the year 2020.Before detailing the range, let's take stock of common innovations, concerning Ambilight, Android TV or image processing, and analyze the paradox of this latest novelty.
In the aftermath of CES, the Dutch Philips held its annual conference devoted to televisions and audio this week in Amsterdam this week in Amsterdam..Chinese TP Vision, which manufactures televisions and now the Philips helmets, is actually absent from the American market.
"2020 will be the year of Ambilight," said Martijn Smelt, marketing director at TP Vision, during a brief opening conference. In other words, 2020 will not be the year of major innovations in terms of display or user interface technology.Philips exposed the prototype of an 88 -inch 8K TV, but the brand estimates that a marketing this year seems to him premature.
In recent years, the TV market has concentrated and standardized. Some "manufacturers" no longer make anything themselves and "only" assemble drawn components from some suppliers, who also sell them to competitors. This is the case of Philips, whose high -end televisions, for example, embark the screens of the Korean LG Display, the only manufacturer of large OLED tiles, and the Android TV operating system in Google ... Exactly like those of Japanese Sony.
However, there are countless combinations remain and that does not prevent these competitors from standing out, on the implementation of the aforementioned technologies, on sound system, but also and above all with home technologies. In addition to Ambilight, a function to which we return later, Philips puts a lot on another specificity: his image processing chip P5, one of the most perfected on the market.
One of the main novelties of Philips TVs in 2020 is thus the fourth generation of the P5.This renews the 5 existing algorithms-noise reduction, amplification of sharpness, contrast and saturation, increase in fluidity-but adds artificial intelligence, more specifically an automatic learning algorithm, to "balance"5 treatments depending on the content (skin, landscape, movement, etc.).Unfortunately, we have noticed during the demonstrations that these treatments still create adverse effects: the fluidity algorithm always generates artifacts and the strengthening of sharpness always amplifies the crenel of the texts and the compression artefacts.
Admittedly, that throws it, but these algorithms which alter the image are increasingly denounced by filmmakers who sensitize an increasingly wide audience of respecting the original rendering of their works.Tom Cruise, at the end of the mission impossible: Fallout, called on the general public to deactivate the fluidity algorithm. And Netflix advised spectators of Roma, Alfonso Cuaron, to also deactivate all other treatments. Then the UHD Alliance, consortium bringing together manufacturers of televisions and producers of films and series, announced last summer the creation of a MovieMaker Mode, with the support of directors like Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan or JJ Abrams. This mode will allow viewers to easily deactivate all image processing, whatever the brand of the TV, instead of deactivating them one by one or having to guess that this is the role of the real cinema mode at theOne or expert in the other.
Pretty little enthusiastic about this function which annihilates one of its specificities, Philips recalls that his televisions already have a "film" mode corresponding "little or prou" to the filmmaker Mode.He specifies that the name of the mode has not yet been stopped, but announces that it "will follow the trend" if everyone calls it in the same way.
In addition, more and more spectators watch films and series indifferently on computers, tablets, even phones, which mostly apply no image processing. In this context, the image processing fleas of manufacturers will be less and less a sales argument.
They will not be completely useless: Philips has demonstrated us a function involving the artificial intelligence of the 4th generation of the P5 to detect and darken the static elements on the screen (logo of a chain, dressing of a continuous information chain, interface element of a video game, etc.).What prevent them from burn OLED screens in the event of a prolonged display, at the cost, however, of an unsightly vignetting effect, at least at this stage of development.
This function could be launched at the end of 2020, but we do not yet know if it will be added to the televisions presented this week, or if it will be reserved for future new features, for example to those of IFA 2020.
Philips fleas will also continue to take care of Ambilight, this exclusive function lighting the wall behind the television to further immerse the viewer. The new televisions take advantage of an improved response time, which reduces the gap that could sometimes be perceived between a flash on the screen and its projection on the wall.In addition, you can now connect your TV directly to Philips Hue bulbs, without Hue Play HDMI Sync Box or configuration on smartphone.
Except an entry -level model still carrying the old Saphi house platform, all the new Philips televisions embark Android TV.Just like those of other brands. But TP Vision took advantage of his press conference to detail his philosophy and implementation.
To start, Google announced in December the development of Android TV 10, which could be released in a few months, potentially before the sale of new Philips televisions this summer this summer. But TP Vision said they focused on stability and that they would not rush into the new version.
New televisions should therefore stick to Android TV 9 for some time (PIE).The platform is animated by the same SOC Mediatek MT5599 as on OLED TVs of the 804, 934 and 984 series of the previous generation. This chip has a CPU with four cortex-cortex-a53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz and an ARM Mali-G51 GPU, it is accompanied by 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage storage.A brief grip revealed a fluid and reactive interface. Finally, in addition to Google Assistant, we find the "skill" Amazon Alexa, which allows you to remote control the television from another device, but not the other way around, as well as optimizations for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
This concludes this article summarizing the generalities concerning new Philips televisions for the year 2020, we detail the range in a separate article.
