“This temporary removal is necessary to avoid identification of individuals or their vehicles in order to protect their privacy and that of their family. Once the situation has returned to normal, the image is once again accessible on the Québec 511 site,” said MTQ spokesperson Émilie Lord.

But the interruption of these cameras has been the subject of much speculation after the Conservative Party of Quebec accused Transport Minister François Bonnardel of censorship on social networks.

"Sincerely I am discouraged to see all the efforts that are put in place to hide the extent of the movement [of truckers] from the Quebec population and to try to discredit its cause", complains a surfer.

This practice would however be regularly used, argued the MTQ, whether during an accident, impaired driving, attempted suicide or when the cameras are used to help the deployment of emergency services. .

The images can also be viewed by the Sûreté du Québec in the event of mischief.

A little before 5 p.m., nearly 20 cameras were still unavailable. The majority concerns Autoroute 40 in the west of Montreal.
