Burundian Francine Niyonsaba wins the Prefontaine Classic tournament in Eugene in the United States over 2 miles (3218.68m). With a time of 9:00.75, she masterfully beat Ethiopian Gidey Letesenebet (9:06.55) and Kenyan Hellen Obiri (9:14.55), all Olympic medalists.
“Fire Cine”, as she calls herself, posted the 2nd fastest time ever recorded in the event. The best world record is 8:58.58 set by Ethiopian Meseret Defar in 2007.
Francine Niyonsaba was clocked at 8:26.79 as she over 3000 meters to also record the world's fastest time of the year in this event.
Silver medalist at the Rio Olympics in 2016, double indoor world champion in the 800 meters, Francine Niyonsaba is no longer allowed to compete in her specialty, the 800m, due to too high a rate of testosterone. Undeterred by this “terrible decision”, she converted to long distances.
The Japanese adventure did not go as she wanted. But she didn't give up. Despite her 4th place in the second series of the 5,000m with a time of 15 min 56 sec at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo, the Burundian athlete was disqualified due to a walking fault. In the 10,000m final, she finished 5th with a time of 30:41.95.
