Do you have time for you this Thursday evening and would you like to relax in front of Netflix? As usual, CNET France is there to help you choose in the important catalog of the platform, and has selected programs to discover on the SVOD service.
The Stateless and Designated Survivor series are our evening recommendations.Let's see together why these two series deserve all your attention.
Synopsis
In Australia, four foreigners are placed in a detention center for immigrants. While they don't have much to do, their stories intertwine in this place where it is not really good. The series tells everyone's experience, how they live and coexist between these walls, symbols of border protection and control.
CNET France's opinion
A mini series passed quite unnoticed, but which nevertheless has a lot of qualities.Inspired by a true story, that of the Australian Cornelia Rau, Stateless addresses themes that are very often treated with brilliance, and knows how to hold the spectator hanging in front of his screen.
What really matters in this series is not how his characters land in the camp, but rather what is going on, and the decryption of the (dys) operations of the Australian immigration system.
More than a simple fiction, the series tries to document the reality and the daily life of thousands of migrants.Often moving, it is always impeccably interpreted by a high -flying cast, Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid's Tale) and Jay Courtney (Suicide Squad) at the head.
The characters are thus neither shots nor too stereotypical, the staging is neat and the scenario without real note.We let ourselves be very easily taken in the story of this docu-fiction series, who knows how to keep in suspense.
Stateless challenges and makes you think, and the show will not leave you indifferent. At CNET France, we appreciated the finesse and realism of the treatment of a subject, however heavily loaded.
Synopsis
Tom Kirkman is secretary to housing and urban development of the United States of America.A member of the "government" of the country of Uncle Sam therefore, but not the most important.A cursed day, an attack kills the president and all his following in the hierarchical order.Against all expectations, Kirkman then finds himself propelled interim president. Not at all prepared, he must therefore move with women and children to the White House, where other tests await him.The whole world is now suspended from his lips and he will have to try to be worthy of his new functions.
CNET France's opinion
Let's say it from the outset: Designated Survivor is a good quality political thriller. It is not at the level of House of Cards certainly, but the series still draws well from the game.
The initial idea is rather good and original. Here, the hero has no overflowing political ambition, on the contrary: he was just aspired to continue his life as a "secondary" minister, not to become president of the United States overnight.
And overall, the series hits.Betrayals, low shots, baseness...The "political jungle" in which Kirkman is struggling is quite skillfully portrayed. The twists and turns succeed and manage to keep up, even if they can sometimes be expected.
Even if the scenario is rather fair and finely written in its relationships between characters, the narration does not escape some facilities either, and the whole thing a few times of credibility.
In the role of Tom Kirkman, Kiefer Sutherland makes a good copy and perfectly embodies the different facets of this honest and integrated man.Surrounded by sharks, it denotes and swims in troubled water from start to finish. However, the rest of the casting struggles to put itself at its level.
In the end, if Designated Survivor seems unfinished and dark sometimes in caricature, it does not prevent the show remains of good quality and that you would be wrong not to give it a chance.
