Since Netflix landed in France, it is clear that the broadcaster has considerably changed the situation in terms of cinematographic consumption, but especially with regard to TV series.
Gone are the endless reruns of old episodes of NCIS on TF1 or M6: today, we're watching Stranger Things and its long-awaited season 4, Dark, The Witcher (we tell you all about season 2 here), Dracula or House of Cards.
Similarly, you no longer need to wait months for a successful series to show up in France. And you can interrupt your broadcast at any time, to resume it on another device, whether it's your tablet, your smartphone, your console, your computer or your ADSL/fiber box.
Netflix, CanalPlay, OCS, Amazon: which is the best service for movies and series?
In short, the advantages of the diffuser are numerous and its prices are ultimately quite attractive. However, if Netflix's interface is quite clear and well thought out, it hides its game well and is full of small features that go completely unnoticed. Here is a whole series of tips and advice to boost your daily Netflix usage.
When you watch Netflix from your browser, you have the option of using the (classic) mouse or the keyboard keys. Like any video player, Netflix has a small set of keyboard shortcuts that can save you a bit of time. Here they are in detail:
Although the Netflix catalog is well supplied, there is probably a series or movie that you would like to see or watch again. Netflix offers you the means to suggest at least 3 programs to it. To do this, go to this page: https://help.netflix.com/fr/titlerequest. Enter one, two or three movie or TV series titles that you would like to find on the SVOD site and press the Submit a suggestion button. You don't have to do anything else.
Note that you can repeat the experiment as many times as you want, but that suggesting the same program several times will have no effect. Finally, media chronology and competition between services oblige, do not expect to see on Netflix a film still shown in theaters, or a series broadcast on HBO, for example (no chance of finding Game of Thrones or season 3 of Westworld).
Netflix: 9 tips for better access to your favorite series and films
Each time you launch a series or a film, even when you give up along the way, they appear in your history and are therefore likely to be displayed from the opening page of the service.
To delete series and movies from your Netflix history, log into your account from a browser and go to the Your account function (at the top, right of the screen). Go to the section called My Profile, select your profile and click on History.
You can then delete all the films and all the episodes you have watched one by one using the small cross to the right of Report a problem. Once an episode is deleted from the list, you also have the option of deleting the entire associated season.
This is information that can be very useful if you want to reduce subscription costs: nothing prevents you from sharing your Netflix account with other users , even if they are located in another city or even another country.
Indeed, Netflix does not force its subscribers to have the same IP when they all watch different programs at the same time. However, there is a limit, set at 1, 2 or 4 simultaneous connections depending on the subscription chosen. But it's still very convenient.
Second little tip: you can share your screen with someone else at any time. An essential function, for example, for watching a film or a series when your spouse is traveling on the other side of the world.
To do this, however, you need to install an extension in your browser, such as Netflix Party (now called Teleparty). Once activated, you are free to launch a video playback within your browser, and share it with whoever you want.
You may not know it, but it is possible to listen to a film or an episode of a series on Netflix as if you were listening to a podcast, from the web browser or from a smartphone. However, not all content is eligible for audio description.
If you're on a PC, click Audio Description, a button at the very bottom of the Netflix homepage. On the Android and iOS mobile application, in the Home tab, choose between Series or Film, then in All genres, scroll through all the proposals until you reach Audio description.
Do you watch Netflix on your smartphone when you're on the go? You don't have a large data plan with your operator? It is possible to curb data consumption by reducing the quality of the videos broadcast.
To do this, launch Netflix from your browser and click on your profile icon. Then select the Account function and then go to Reading Settings. There, you can considerably reduce the broadcast quality of a series or a film: from 3 to 7 GB per hour for Ultra HD, you have the possibility of reducing the bit rate necessary for broadcasting to 300 or 700 MB per hour for lower quality.
Downloading videos allows you to watch a series or a movie later, without being connected to Netflix. Clearly, you can watch a program on public transport, on the plane, abroad or when the connection is really bad. This option works on Android or iOS.
To download a film or an episode of a series, access its description, without launching it, from your smartphone or tablet. If a download is allowed, you'll see Download next to each episode or movie. Simply click on it to start the download. Please note that not all programs are eligible. Some majors ask Netflix not to offer this option on their programs.
You can also delete downloaded videos or change the video quality. Open the Netflix app and select your profile icon (or More, or the horizontal bars, or the three little dots depending on your device). Select App Settings. Here you will find all the settings related to downloads.
Why delete your downloaded videos? On the one hand because the memory of your smartphone is not unlimited, but also and above all because Netflix does not allow you to download a very large number of episodes at once. This number is limited to about twenty (a full season, in short), depending on the rights obtained by Netflix from each broadcaster.
Finally, note that Netflix allows downloading to an SD card, rather than to the device's memory.
By default, Netflix only displays a small amount of categories based on your preferences and what you've already watched (animation, drama , thrillers, historical series, etc.). But categories, there are actually more than 200, all identifiable using a code (not counting the subcategories). The complete list of codes and categories in question can be found at this address.
To automatically display the content of a category, nothing could be simpler:
Depending on the subscription to which you have subscribed, you can connect to Netflix from one, two or four computers at the same time time. It's great, because it allows several people in the family (or not) to take advantage of the video service and share the costs. On the other hand, what could be more annoying than not being able to watch a program because the authorized number of simultaneous connections has reached its limit? Or because someone hacked your account?
To remedy this, connect to the Netflix site and click on your avatar, at the very top right. Select the Your account function. Then select the Log out of all devices function and then, on the screen, press the Log out button. There you go, the trick is played, you are once again the sole master on board. And if you don't want this mishap to happen again, change your password from the My Account interface.
On Netflix, you can ensure that each account has access to content dedicated to children. This is the basic function when you create a new account: Netflix asks you if the person attached to this account has the right to watch movies and TV series for all ages, or only those reserved for teenagers and children.
But there is a way to go even further in the settings. To do this, go to My Account, then click on the desired profile. Look for the Parental Controls feature. This is where you can increase the level of protection for all accounts: young children, older children (-10 years old), teenagers (-12 years old) or adults (-16 and -18 years old). ). You will first need to create a PIN code, which must be entered systematically when one of the accounts subsequently tries to access content that is not intended for it.
Netflix is constantly on the lookout for improvement. But before releasing its new features in the public square, the broadcaster offers them in beta test to its users. If you want to experience and enjoy new Netflix options before everyone else, go to My Account (always from your avatar icon, top right, and via the Your Account function). Then click Participate in tests. Drag the right slider to Disable and press the Done button.
By default, when you have finished watching the episode of a series, the next episode launches automatically. It is perfectly possible to deactivate this function. To do this, open your browser and log in to Netflix.com.
At the top right of the screen, click on your profile avatar and go to Account. In the My Profile section, located at the very bottom, opt for the Reading Settings function. There, uncheck the Autoplay the next episode of a series function on all devices and validate using the Save button.
Watching Rick and Morty and tired of not being able to read those tiny white subtitles? If the default method of displaying subtitles does not suit you on Netflix, go to your account settings (avatar at the top right then Account).
At the very bottom of the page that appears, you will find a function called Display subtitles. Click on it, a new page then appears, giving you the choice as to the font used (typewriter, print, console, block, casual…), its color, its size, its drop shadow or even its background.
Here's a feature everyone knows about, rating on Netflix. As you have already noticed, it is possible to put a thumbs up or down on all the content on the platform. By default, the service relies on the content you have already viewed to recommend relevant content to you.
But if you want to hone the senses of the algorithm, remember to give a thumbs up to each content you watch so that Netflix can offer you series and films even more suited to your tastes.
While it took a long time to use a VPN to enjoy Netflix in France, those days are now over. Since September 2014, the broadcaster has been officially available in France, so the VPN is no longer really useful. Except… Some programs are only available in the United States (or other countries). As a result, the VPN shows its worth.
A good VPN is definitely a paid VPN: count on average a subscription of €5/month for an effective VPN. There are dozens of them, some getting blocked by Netflix. Among those that work are ExpressVPN, StrongVPN, NordVPN and Buffered VPN. For us, we opted for vyprVPN, which worked wonderfully during our tests. Once the VPN is set up, all you have to do is connect to Netflix and, for the sake of conscience, switch the interface to English (via your account settings). From then on, hundreds of films and series unavailable for France appeared. Note that in all cases, you will need English subtitles.
