Unlimited plan, without commitment, blocked, international abroad, 4G, 5G compatible... It is not always easy to choose from the plethora of offers offered by the many mobile phone providers. Before subscribing, it is important to study the different types of plans to find the one that is best suited to your needs and finances and, ultimately, select the appropriate mobile operator.
Each plan meets these usage and budget criteria. There are mainly two types of mobile phone plan:
The classic mobile plan with commitment implies, as its name suggests, to commit to a contract for a period of 12 or 24 months. The longer the commitment period, the lower the bill for the package. In general, this is a commitment package with mobile (the price of the latter is included in the subscription). The only drawback: the complexity of the termination.
Conversely, the non-binding mobile offer allows you to terminate your subscription contract without notice, at any time. The customer is not bound to any long-term contract and can leave the operator whenever he wishes, free of charge, to switch to the competition. Unlike the plan with commitment, the telephone is generally not provided (the operators themselves do not subsidize the purchase of the device). A non-binding mobile plan is rarely offered because it is more expensive.
In addition to the flat rate with international calls included, subscribers to a classic mobile offer (with or without commitment) can also opt for the unlimited flat rate. Quite affordable, the unlimited allows the consumer to call without worrying about running out of minutes as well as SMS and MMS provided in the package.
IMPORTANT: the classic plans offer a more or less significant data envelope, depending in particular on the customer's Internet surfing rate. The most modest users will be able to settle for 1 gigabyte (GB), while a data envelope of at least 5 GB will be more suitable for watching streaming videos on a daily basis, for example.
For information, 1 GB is equivalent to listening to approximately two hours of streaming music or surfing the Internet for 60 hours.
For those who wish to strictly control their expenses and, in particular, avoid paying additional charges for exceeding the call hours or the SMS/MMS quota included in their plan, there is a solution: the blocked plan. Often chosen by parents looking for a first subscription for their child, these packages avoid the risk of going beyond their initial budget. Once this is reached, it is impossible to call (except to call for help). Another possible option: mobile plans without Internet (only for telephone calls, SMS and MMS).
NOTE: apart from the various mobile plans mentioned in this article, it is also possible to turn to the prepaid mobile card (of a defined and limited duration, it is rechargeable).
As a reminder, Orange (formerly France Telecom), SFR (a subsidiary of Altice), Bouygues Télécom (subsidiary of the Bouygues group) and Free (subsidiary of the Illiad) are the four major telephone operators currently in France. Also called MNO (for Mobile Network Operator) - they have their own mobile networks, purchased from the competent authorities such as the National Frequency Agency (ANFR).
The major quartet of mobile operators offers a fairly substantial range of packages, either in its own name or through its commercial brand (at least for Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecom). Plan subscriptions can be combined with smartphones, available at a lower cost in return for a 24-month commitment.
On the occasion of the arrival of mobile offers at low prices and without commitment from Free Mobile, the other major operators in turn launched in 2011 ranges of packages at affordable prices without commitment, through a commercial brand . It is :
MNOs differ in this from "virtual" operators (or MVNO, for Mobile Virtual Network Operator). Arrived on the French market in 2005, the latter have neither a mobile network nor an infrastructure: they are therefore obliged to sign a contract with an MNO in order to be able to use its network.
The main MVNOs include (non-exhaustive list):
Most MVNO offers are non-binding, and they do not offer discount phones.
In October 2021, the operator Orange announced the removal of the commitment on its classic (excluding Sosh) 4G and 5G packages offered without a subsidized smartphone. It now offers 4G packages only without commitment (see below).
SFR offers four 4G mobile plans subject to a 12-month (one-year) commitment:
This range of 4G plans with unlimited calls and SMS/MMS offered by the Altice subsidiary is available without a mobile with a 12-month commitment; or with the purchase of a new phone at a great price with a minimum commitment period of 24 months.
Preferential rates are offered to Box SFR customers. For them, the 2h 100 MB package is thus displayed at 0 euros during the first year of subscription.
The 2022 prices for 4G and 4G+ mobile plans (which offer a faster connection than 4G) with commitment marketed by SFR are shown in this table:

Free Mobile does not generally offer a plan 4G mobile with commitment, except private sales (very short-lived). The operator, which was the first on the market to offer a mobile plan with no time commitment, only markets this type of plan (the Free customer is not necessarily linked to an operator for 12 or 24 months).
On November 20, 2020, Arcep (the French telecoms policeman) gave the green light to the four operators “ historical" mobile telephony so that they put into service the frequency bands dedicated to 5G. The fifth generation of mobile networks – which succeeds 2G, 3G and 4G technologies – is supposed to offer a connection speed ten times faster than that of 4G.
To take advantage of 5G in France, you must have a compatible smartphone, have a compatible plan (5G subscription) and be in an area covered by 5G by your operator. Otherwise, only 4G access is possible.
At the moment, three of the four major operators (Orange, Bouygues Télécom and SFR) offer several 5G compatible packages with commitment.
Orange, which promises with 5G speeds "up to 3 to 4 times faster than 4G to meet changing customer needs », no longer offers a 5G mobile plan with commitment since October 2021. Its 5G plans are now offered without commitment (see below).
SFR markets four 5G plans with commitment. The packages, offered with a 12 or 24 month commitment, are as follows:
All these plans, which include unlimited calls, SMS and MMS, also benefit from discounts linked to SFR Family advantages and Multi-Packs discounts.

Bouygues Télécom, which opened its commercial 5G network on December 1, 2020, offers 5G plans with commitment as part of its Sensation series. The operator offers five formulas in all, including:
Subscribing to a 5G package allows you to acquire a mobile phone at a preferential price.
Bbox subscribers can benefit from discounts on 5G plans.

Like 4G packages, which only markets without commitment, the operator does not offer a 5G plan with commitment.
While most mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) offer 4G mobile plans with no time commitment (without offering reduced-rate phones), some market unlimited 4G plans with a smartphone subject to a 12 or 24 hour commitment. month.
La Poste Mobile offers four 4G packages with commitment:
Whether the commitment is for 12 or 24 months, the prices for 4G plans are identical. On the other hand, the duration of the commitment has a significant impact on the price of the smartphone chosen in the offer. In concrete terms, the 24-month commitment to a Forfait + Mobile offer from La Poste Mobile makes it possible to obtain a phone at a much lower price than a 12-month commitment.
Customers of the Internet Box (marketed by SFR) also benefit from preferential rates on mobile plans from La Poste Mobile.

Prixtel, a telephone operator created in 2004, does not offer in 2022 of a 4G mobile plan with a long-term commitment. The MVNO, which uses the Orange and SFR networks, only markets 4G mobile plans without commitment.
Coriolis Telecom, a virtual mobile operator born in 1989 and present on the Orange and SFR networks, markets a range of smartphone plans with larger data envelopes of 10 GB to 250 GB per month with 4G speed, some being 5G compatible. This range, available with the purchase of a mobile phone (from 1 euro per device), is subject to a commitment period of 12 or 24 months.

NRJ Mobile, operator of virtual mobile network launched in 2005, is a specialist in non-binding packages and low-cost mobiles. Nevertheless, the MVNO (which uses the networks of SFR, Orange and Bouygues Télécom) occasionally offers 4G offers with a commitment.
It takes 10 euros to activate the triple-cut SIM card.
To find out about the 4G offers with commitment offered by NRJ Mobile, go to the operator's website.
CIC telecom customers can no longer benefit since November 2021 from the offers offered to them by the virtual mobile network operator of the Crédit Mutuel group – CIC. From now on, it is Bouygues Télécom offers that are offered on its merchant site.
It is therefore Bouygues Télécom which now markets its mobile offers within the network of Crédit Mutuel group bank branches, via its dedicated Bouygues Telecom Business-Distribution branch.
The offers are accessible at this address, via the CIC website.
Like CIC's telecom customers (Crédit Mutuel Mobile and CIC Mobile belong to the same group: the MVNO Euro-Information Telecom), those of Crédit Mutuel Mobile no longer have access to the mobile offers offered by the operator Crédit Mutuel Mobile. Since November 2021, the telecom customers of these two banks have been able to select from a special dedicated mobile range set up by Bouygues Télécom, which bought the two brands Crédit Mutuel Mobile and CIC Mobile, which have now disappeared.
To take advantage of the offers, go to the Crédit Mutuel website.
Auchan Telecom (which is one of the brands of Euro-Information Telecom), offers, in addition to its two non-binding packages, one-off offers with commitment via the networks of Bouygues Telecom, Orange and SFR. No package with commitment is currently marketed.
In the past, Auchan Telecom offered a limited series package with a six-month commitment. It included 60 GB of data, for only 5.99 euros per month for six months (the monthly rate then went to 16.99 euros).
Launched in 2011, Cdiscount's mobile division mainly offers non-binding plans. But the brand, a pioneer of French e-commerce, occasionally markets offers with commitment.
The latest: a 4G Limited Edition plan with 100 GB, with a 24-month commitment. Displayed at the price of 29.99 euros per month, the offer allowed the subscriber of the offer to have a refurbished iPhone 11 Black at the price of 19.99 euros. It was necessary to subscribe until January 24, 2022. Each device was supplied with a SIM card (it takes 10 euros to activate it).
The one-time offer with commitment offered by Cdiscount Mobile is shown in the following table:

Orange is drawing a line under the commitment on its 4G mobile plans. The incumbent telephone operator announced, in October 2021, the launch of its first offers without compulsory commitment.
The non-binding mobile offer from Orange (formerly France Telecom) is now available in four separate 4G (4th generation mobile telephony) packages:
For information, the 80 GB 4G plan was discontinued in October 2021.
Each of Orange's mobile plans includes unlimited calls, SMS and MMS in France as well as a certain amount of Internet data in 4G network coverage. Alongside the basic offers, Orange always reserves reduced rates for its Open customers (those who have subscribed to a fixed line and a mobile line on the same contract).

Sosh is Orange's low-cost brand (launched in 2011) through which the incumbent operator offers cheaper 4G mobile plans and without commitment (possibility of terminating at any time), through its network. Indeed, Orange does not market 4G mobile plans without a duration commitment in its own name.
Only available on the Internet, these 4G packages (permanent or in limited series) are offered with or without a telephone. Each package includes unlimited SMS and MMS in mainland France.
In 2022, Sosh is offering the following non-binding 4G packages via its website:
ATTENTION: the cost of activating the SIM card is 10 euros.

Free Mobile (subsidiary of the Iliad group) has since 2012 its strategy consisting of offering only 4G plans with no time commitment. The fourth and last French operator to have obtained a mobile telephony license markets some of the cheapest packages (from only 2 euros per month) and with large data envelopes for sending an e-mail, browsing the Internet or chatting. on social networks.
For now, Free Mobile has two 4G subscriptions, one of which is limited:
The first plan at only 2 euros per month is aimed at small, flavored consumers who essentially need to be reached but who are not used to browsing on a smartphone (the elderly, for example). It offers an envelope of 2 hours of calls. SMS and MMS are unlimited from France, Europe and the overseas departments. An envelope of 50 MB of Internet data is renewed every month. Note that this offer is free for Freebox subscribers.
The 80 GB Free Series plan is intended for people who want an offer with unlimited calls and SMS/MMS with a good data budget. PLEASE NOTE: to take advantage of this, you must subscribe online by February 1, 2022.

Low-cost operators of major mobile operators offer, for some, packages without 5G commitment or “5G compatible”. This is the case, for the time being, of RED by SFR (SFR), of B&You (Bouygues Télécom). Free Mobile also markets this type of offer. Since October 2021, Orange has in turn been offering this type of package.
In October 2021, Orange announced the abandonment of the commitment on its 5G mobile plans. The incumbent operator offers three “5G compatible 4G packages” without commitment:
Package prices vary depending on whether you are a Livebox customer (Open pack) or not. The packages include the multi-SIM option: it is possible, on request, to obtain an additional SIM card to be used, for example, in a tablet or an Airbox. The 5G compatible SIM card is free, but its activation is charged.

If 5G has been activated at Orange for packages with commitment, it is not yet the same at its subsidiary Sosh. Sosh customers do not currently benefit from any non-binding 5G mobile plan offer.
People who wish to take advantage of a 5G offer free of any commitment on the Orange network can turn to the MVNO Prixtel.
On December 15, 2020, the SFR subsidiary unveiled its first non-binding 5G offer. An offer that had quickly disappeared, since it was only offered for… two days. At the time, this limited series was supposed to last until December 21, 2020. The offer has redone since its appearance. The last promotional offer concerned a subscription valid until January 24, 2022.
In detail, the RED by SFR 5G plan – which of course requires a compatible phone – offers:
Promotional rates are offered to new customers. In addition, the activation of the triple cut SIM card is charged 10 euros.
The table below presents the characteristics of the RED by SFR no-commitment 5G package to be subscribed before January 24, 2022:

Bouygues Télécom was the first operator to offer 5G on non-binding packages through its low-cost subsidiary B&You. It offers a no-commitment 5G package including:
The SIM card, sent in the days following the validation of the file, is charged 10 euros.

On December 15, 2020, Free Mobile unveiled two no-commitment 5G plans. But unlike other major operators, who have raised prices on 5G plans, Free Mobile offers the new technology at the same price as 4G.
In 2022, the fourth operator is marketing one of the cheapest 5G plans to date. This is an unlimited no-commitment package at 19.99 euros per month. This price increases to 15.99 euros per month for Freebox subscribers, and to 9.99 euros monthly for Freebox Pop customers.
This package includes:
In addition, the temporary 4G offers offered by Free will now automatically switch to the 5G formula after one year.
La Poste Mobile (the MVNO is 51% owned by La Poste and 49% by SFR, whose network it uses) offers, alongside its three plans with commitment, a range of 4G plans without commitment. They are currently five in number:
These plans are subject to the prior purchase of a Forfaits SIM card at 14.90 euros at the post office or 9.90 euros on the La Poste Mobile website (you must enter your identity bank account for monthly direct debits), then when it is activated.
Some of La Poste Mobile's no-commitment plans include benefits for SFR Internet Box subscribers, as well as online promotions.

Prixtel is a virtual operator known for its non-binding mobile plans that adapt to consumer usage. The MVNO offers three distinct formulas online, adjustable according to the mobile consumption of its subscribers (they pay the right price each month) and available (as desired) on the Orange or SFR network:
Each plan offered by Prixtel, which can be canceled at any time, has several levels of data consumption which are automatically activated according to consumption.
Discounts on mobile rates are offered by Prixtel, and they are only intended for new subscribers.

The operator Coriolis Telecom, whose mobile offers operate on the SFR network , not only offers packages with a long-term commitment (12 or 24 months), but also packages that allow subscribers to terminate their contract with the MVNO at any time.
There are five 4G plans without commitment (including a 5G compatible, limited edition) that are in the catalog of the Coriolis Telecom online store:
These low-cost packages may be subject to promotions, their price benefiting from a significant discount the first year before returning to their traditional amount after 12 months. These discounts are available exclusively via the operator's website and apply only to new subscriptions.
This is the case with the unlimited calls plan with a monthly budget of 2 GB of data: it is displayed at 4.99 euros during the first year (then 9.99 euros from the thirteenth month) . Within the same period, the package offering 30 GB of data is offered at 7.99 euros per month for 12 months, then 14.99 euros per month.
If the cost of activating the SIM card (mandatory to take advantage of your mobile plan) generally costs 10 euros with operators, they amount to only 1 euro with Coriolis Telecom.

NRJ Mobile offers three Woot 4G mobile plans without commitment:
The virtual operator (or MVNO) also offers, on an ad hoc basis, non-binding mobile plan offers outside of its traditional range. This is the case of the non-binding package with 5 GB of data, which can be subscribed until January 27, 2022. People who subscribe to this offer before this deadline pay only 3.99 euros per month during the first year, then 7.99 euros per month.
Another offer was also available for subscription until January 27, 2022: a non-binding package with 60 GB of data. The price: 7.99 euros per month the first year, then 14.99 euros per month the following months.
As a reminder: as an MVNO, NRJ mobile does not benefit from its own mobile phone network. The virtual operator has established partnerships with Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecom to be able to use their antennas.
The triple-cut SIM card is charged 10 euros only once when subscribing.

Since November 2021, CIC bank branches no longer offer ranges of non-binding mobile phone plans that were distributed by the MVNO CIC Mobile. From now on, CIC customers can turn to non-binding offers (such as the Prompto range) provided directly by Bouygues Telecom.
Non-binding offers are available from the CIC website.
Like CIC Mobile, Crédit Mutuel Mobile no longer offers non-binding mobile plans in its name. It is now Bouygues Telecom, which has got hold of a group that oversees the two virtual operators (MVNO), which markets mobile offers without commitment within the network of Crédit Mutuel bank branches.
All non-binding mobile plan offers available to Crédit Mutuel customers are available on the bank's website.
Auchan Telecom markets two 4G mobile plans without commitment (one with 2 hours of calls and unlimited SMS/MMS, the other completely unlimited ). But the data envelopes of each of these offers can each be personalized using three paid options (which therefore makes six different mobile plans). In addition, there are occasional promotional offers, such as the “all unlimited” series with 30 GB of data.
The package including 2 hours of calls is one of the cheapest offers on the market. It includes unlimited SMS and MMS in mainland France and a data envelope that ranges (depending on the option chosen) from 20 MB to 10 GB of mobile Internet.
De facto, the offer is more focused on the needs of families, with small low-cost packages that are suitable for teenagers. For information, the activation of the SIM card generates 10 euros of costs.
The prices of the two packages without commitment of duration and adjustable from Auchan Telecom are shown in this table:

The virtual telecom operators (MVNO), which do not have their own network – unlike the so-called “classic” operators, offer, for some, mobile packages which allow, in exchange for a long-term commitment , access to a mobile phone at an advantageous price (sometimes from 1 euro).
Thus, La Poste Mobile, Coriolis Mobile or even CIC Mobile (and therefore Crédit Mutuel Mobile, since they belong to the same group) market subsidized packages.
The table below lists the MVNOs that offer mobile plans with subsidized smartphones:

Most mobile phone operators offer mobile plans highlighting the qualifier “unlimited”. In reality, there are a multitude of so-called unlimited plans, each corresponding to very specific consumer needs (see the tables above).
Thus, the unlimited aspect can concern:
Today, most plans offer unlimited calls and SMS/MMS together. These offers are intended for all people regardless of their budget, since one can now obtain such a package for less than 10 euros per month.
However, it is better to read the many asterisks in the advertisements or on the sites of the operators. In particular, it is necessary to check the place from which these calls and messages can be made and their destination (to fixed or mobile numbers in mainland France, for example). This will avoid having communications billed outside the package.
There are also “all unlimited” plans, which include calls, SMS/MMS and unlimited Internet, in France and abroad. Without real surprise, they are displayed at much higher prices than the average.
In reality, unlimited plans are often…limited. Thus, operators often block the number of possible recipients of calls and/or messages. Similarly, a call often cannot exceed 2 or 3 hours in a row, otherwise it will become out of the plan.
Blocked mobile plans are not in the range of several operators. The main interest of these packages is to rigorously control both your budget and your telephone consumption. This is why this type of subscription is more advisable and recommended for the youngest (children and adolescents). But the blocked package is also of interest to seniors, who want to avoid seeing their mobile bill climb at the end of the month.
First and foremost, you need to determine the telephony and mobile internet needs of the holder of the mobile plan. It is therefore important to take a closer look at the characteristics so as not to subscribe to an offer with services that would ultimately not be useful.
Once the communication time is exhausted, the plan is automatically blocked. With a blocked plan, it is therefore the guarantee of a fixed price invoice. In some cases, it is still possible to benefit from unlimited SMS and MMS (for plans that offer it).
When subscribing to the blocked package, it is possible to activate or not the blocking option free of charge on request.
NOTE: Blocked subscriptions are offered on promotion much less often than before, with operators highlighting unlimited offers instead.
Three of the four main operators (Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecom) offer, under their own name or via their low-cost brand (Sosh, RED by SFR and B& You) blocked mobile plans.
Orange sells two 4G subscriptions in blocked versions:
Its Sosh brand offers a blocked 100 MB 4G plan, with 2 hours of blocked calls.
For its part, SFR has marketed a single blocked plan: the 2-hour 100 MB plan (also available in the classic version). RED by SFR offers a version blocked on Internet use on its single package with 100 GB.
For its part, Bouygues Telecom offers two blocked 4G offers in its Sensation series:
His low-cost brand B&You sells a 4G plan with 100 MB of mobile data (at 4.99 euros per month) which is not strictly speaking blocked. However, this service allows you to obtain this option for free, as well as a “parental control” function free of charge.
The major operators are not the only ones to offer locked plans. Some virtual operators (MVNO) market them. This is particularly the case:
Whether with or without a commitment, it is quite possible to cancel your mobile phone plan. All you have to do is notify your operator by sending a registered termination letter with acknowledgment of receipt. To view our termination letter template, click here.
The termination of a non-binding package can be done at any time, without notice. This generally does not generate any costs.
What about a package with commitment? For a commitment period of 12 months, the early termination fees correspond to the amount remaining due to your operator. For a period of 24 months, it is necessary to add a quarter (25%) of the monthly payments remaining between the twelfth and the twenty-fourth month, in accordance with the Chatel law of 2008.
