The City of Le Roeulx has been using mobile surveillance cameras for several years now to fight illegal dumping. In 2021, the Minister of the Environment Céline Tellier launched a plan allowing Walloon towns and municipalities to obtain more resources to invest in video surveillance. After submitting a file to the SPW Environment, the Municipality of Roeulx has just learned that it would benefit from an envelope of 25,000 euros.

"Certain offenses have already been sanctioned but we want to go further and this subsidy will allow it", explains Damien Sauvage, Alderman for the Environment. "Completing our current network with mobile cameras is our priority. We want to act on the polluter-pays principle: it is no longer up to our community to pay for these daily incivilities".

In total, an envelope of almost 650,000 euros was released for Walloon cities wishing to strengthen their fleet of surveillance cameras. Caught in the act, the polluters are directly fined. Nevertheless, the City of Le Roeulx has been fighting against these illegal dumps for several years and despite the means implemented, they never end. "Every day, our public sanitation workers work along our roads, waterways or public spaces to pick up the incivilities of certain citizens. And despite this tremendous work at all times, we see that it does not stop. " explains Damien Sauvage.

Surveillance by mobile camera is added to a series of other actions carried out by the city to ensure the best possible respect for the environment. For example, in schools, work to raise awareness of good daily behavior and the environment is carried out among the youngest. The City is also part of the "Haine River Contract". During thematic days, the City of Le Roeulx and its collaborators meet the actors of the Haine valley in order to plan actions to restore the river, its surroundings and the water resources of the basin. The inhabitants can therefore propose their wishes concerning the quality of their watercourses and thus take part in a concerted management of the environment.
