iOS
72 comments Florian Innocente |2019 is the year of dark mode on mobile OS. At the same time as Google with Android Q, iOS 13 will take on this optional display mode. macOS Mojave inaugurated it a year ago, it is now up to iPhone and iPad.
There is a relatively quick way to switch between "Light" and "Dark" mode, it's through the Control Center. Tapping on the brightness setting shows a third icon named "Aspect". This switch also indicates until when the selected mode will be active.
The full settings can be found in the "Brightness and display" options of iOS. There, you activate the mode of your choice and you can define an automatic switch between light and dark according to time criteria. The change will be done either according to sunrise and sunset, or with time settings of your choice.
The dark theme applies to the entire system interface and apps, at least those that have been adapted accordingly. The wallpaper also snaps to this theme setting. However, it requires optimized funds and Apple provides four of them. They contain a mixture of colors including white. We spot them in the gallery with their daytime/nighttime icon (also read iOS 13 and macOS 10.15: install the new wallpapers).
The change in the wallpaper occurs if you have first activated the Dark mode and then depending on the ambient light: when it drops, the colors are attenuated and the white spot turns black. This mechanism is optional, it is a choice to be made in the wallpaper settings.
Almost everywhere the iOS interface has been recreated in dark, as have those of the apps. Some have not yet gone there, this is the case of Weather or those that display web content (the Apple Store app for example).
Speaking of the web, if sites have been optimized to take into account the display mode of the system visiting them, they will offer a dark presentation (read Safari TP: websites can switch to dark mode depending on macOS Mojave). Example with two personal sites of members of our team.
Then a few screenshots of apps whose interface takes advantage of dark mode. Note that for Safari, it is not easy to tell the difference between a page visited in private mode (which by default uses a dark tone for its interface) and the same page in normal browsing but with the dark mode interface. It can be spotted with the (too small) mention "Private" in front of the site's domain name.

article>Thizzface69 |When is the public beta?
tt9296tt |@Thizzface69
July.
Poweruser75011 |It's pretty stable I feel. For a beta 1 anyway.
iVador |@Poweruser75011
MacRumors users say they are fine. I pass my X? Max and my iPad 6 on this beta tonight for the part
Poweruser75011 |@iVador
Done last night, I couldn't resist. Dark mode I needed it

And your Mac Pro 2019 under Catalina we are sure.
ofabriceo | can you judge the stability on a photo??
Poweruser75011 |@ofabriceo
Uh, no?
arnaaud57 |@Poweruser75011
I have the impression too and am trying to install it? feedback?
alexyb8 |Thanks for the article
brumalexam | What about the iGeneration app which until now requires a subscription to have the dark mode? Will the app automatically switch to iOS mode or will you still have to pay the subscription to take advantage of it?
anonx |@brumalexam
Hehe the annoying question, well seen! ?
jack atreides |@brumalexam
Well, I hope you don't have to pay a MacG subscription to use a dark mode that is provided as standard and free of charge by Apple.
MacG should have offered all readers the dark mode for free so as not to damage our little eyes. Health has no price or subscription.

In my opinion, dark mode is going to be a basic version. It's a system function now. Not a specific option.
Nicolas Furno |@brumalexam
Dark Mode will be a feature available to everyone when iOS 13 is released. Club subscribers will no doubt keep additional options on the type of dark mode, but the basic function will become free in fact.
Lukas Apple Fan |@nicolasf
Thank you very much!!!
Rifilou |@nicolasf
You won't have to add anything to the code of your app? iOS can automatically switch an app to dark mode if it hasn't been coded for? (Your app is already but I wonder)
simnico971 |@Rifilou
Never mind, app dark modes are tinkering coded differently in each app. With iOS 13 will offer specific APIs that apps can use to adjust to the system setting. So yes, the code will have to be adapted a bit.
Rifilou |@simnico971
Ok thank you very much for the precision
Chris K | It's probably psychological but I find dark mode much more pleasant on iOS 13 (which I've been playing with since last night) than on MacOS.
nicoldugard |What happens if you activate night shift and dark mode?
Jay69 |@nicoldugard
I have the same question...
Osei Tutu |I guess it gives a dark reddish like on the s8+. Anyway that's what I have on the s8+
Megalo |By installing the beta 1 of iOS 13 and Mac OS 10.15, do you receive the updates to finally arrive at the "definitive" version or do you have to do a clean install each time?
soothing |Shall I take the bread?
Rodney Jerkins |I downloaded the iOS 13 ipsw file, but cannot install it via itunes
jb18v |I had read that XCode was also needed, wait for the public beta otherwise
Rodney Jerkins |@jb18v
Yeah I think you're right I'll wait quietly
yaya31832 |Dark mode on mac g please
donatello |This hype around dark mode, which is a feature worthy of MacOS 8.6, is one more sign that computing is going in circles these days.
oomu |I'm fascinated that it's becoming so important to users.
xDave |@donatello
Haha? Finally, the Appearance skins didn't go that far in integration. It was pure dress-up gimmick.
Rom 1 |I don't find it very beautiful, I prefer white.
DamienLT |@Rom 1
I had the same thought! I have never hung on to dark colors for interfaces.
Rom 1 |@DamienLT
The same. What would be interesting, on the other hand, would be to be able to lower the brightness even more. Is there a margin on an X?.
DamienLT |@Rom 1
Serious! When I see friends having the brightness on full while me, on the contrary, it is almost at zero, I don't know how they manage not to have their eyes sunk.
Rom 1 |@DamienLT
Same and they don't seem to mind. I wish we could lower the brightness even more. ?
Horfilas |@Rom 1
This is normally already possible for a while via the accessibility options.
Rom 1 |@Horfilas
It's still too strong, there's still room. ;)
denisdp |@Rom 1
Have you tried the white point reduction accessibility setting? Combined with that of low brightness and you have a screen almost off.
Rom 1 |@denisdp
Not bad! Before the white dot it was just a tick, now there is a gauge. Thanks for getting me back to this setting. I will try tonight. ;)
Dimemas |It hurts the eyes I think
niclet |I think dark mode is a great idea. Not just for resting the eyes that get photon blasted in bright mode, but also for energy conservation that will make a big difference on all of our battery dependent devices. This is far from being a "hype".
Dimemas |Really? I was just thinking the opposite. On the contrary, you get more out of reading text on black.
Lucky the books aren't in dark mode lol
