Testifying to the interest of the public, the figures can say a lot about the quality of a film or a series.Hence the importance has always brought to the box office in the cinema, as in television audiences. But while they have taken a substantial place in the entertainment world for the past 10 years, to the point of even shaking the little and big screens, the streaming platforms, they do not really play the game.Among the mastodon, neither Netflix, nor Amazon Prime Video, nor Disney+ do not really share their data.Between the three, there is one that is, however, a little more transparent than the others ... It is the great pioneer, the one that makes "tudum" when you light it.
Faites le plein de films et séries sur NetflixNetflix already makes some efforts that allow you to (a little). The company notably updates a top 10 of the most watched programs in each country daily, visible directly on its platform. Each year, it also reveals other rankings, by categories this time (films, series, documentaries), established on all of the last 12 months. The problem is that these different tops do not give figures. To have it, you have to wait for the streaming service to communicate on it, generally when it announces its quarterly results to its investors. And again, the data thus put forward on the number of households that have watched this or that program in the world are to be taken with tweezers ... because, as for the above -mentioned tops, a view is counted as soon asminus 2 minutes were viewed.Enough to inflate the numbers somewhat ...
"Based", "anything", "little representative", "no verification".These words, it was Netflix Itself who reported them in a statement published this Tuesday, November 16, 2021, before adding: "We have received many returns on our audience measurements in recent years."Would the streaming giant be ready to really play the transparency card? Well it seems that yes.The company has indeed announced the implementation of a new audience calculation system, this time taking into account the number of hours of viewing of each program. And it will now be applied not only for the top 10 daily newspapers by country put forward directly on the platform, but also for new, weekly rankings, which will be published every Tuesday on an annex site: TOP10.Netflix.com.
Already available, although for the moment only in English or Spanish (additional languages will arrive next year), this site lists several rankings, calculated therefore "depending on the viewing hours recorded from Monday to Sundaythe previous week ", as Netflix specifies in its press release.Particularly complete it must be said, there are on the one hand tops 10 worldwide, divided into 4 categories (films and series, each English-speaking or non-English speaker), and on the other hand tops 10 per country, where weonly find two categories (films and series).
So we discover for example that, on the week of November 8 to 14, worldwide, it's - not surprising - the Red Notice Blockbuster which sits in the position of the English -speaking films ranking, with 148,720,000 hours viewed. While the film carried by Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot is also first in the French top (and many other countries), we find on the other hand the Italian drama Yara at the head of the overall ranking of non-English speakers, with 17950,000 hours recorded. On the series side, it is season 3 of Narcos: Mexico City which is first, both in the hexagonal top 10 and in the world ranking of English -speaking series, where it has some 50,290,000 hours viewed during the week.Unsurprisingly again, with regard to non-English speakers at the global level, this time it is the Squid Game phenomenon that reigns supreme, with 42,790,000 hours recorded last week.
Although, as Netflix recognizes in its press release, "the duration of viewing promotes longer series and films", this new method of calculation should still give a better estimate of the most popular films and series onthe platform. While the most curious will therefore be able to go to the annex site to dissect all these weekly rankings, we will already have a good idea of the successful programs thanks to the daily top 10 accessible directly on the platform, which therefore also takes the number ofhours viewed.
