Between you and SFR, it's over. Well almost. Because you are going to take a box from a competitor, or quite simply close your line, you will therefore have to cancel your SFR Internet subscription. How to terminate your box contract with this supplier? How much does termination cost at SFR? And how do you return your box or keep your email address after the end of the contract? Here is everything you need to know when you want to terminate the Internet at SFR. Starting with good news: you may have (almost) nothing to do.
To terminate your SFR box contract, the procedure can be extremely simple indeed. All you have to do is take out an Internet subscription with a competing provider, asking to keep your landline number. In this case, it is your new operator who will take care of terminating your contract with SFR. We explain the procedure in detail in our guide on changing Internet operator with number portability.
If you want to cancel SFR for another provider, while keeping your number, it is better to stick to this procedure. And avoid terminating your SFR box subscription first, then subscribing to a new operator: between the two, you risk having your access cut off. It is therefore preferable to take a new offer from a competitor - by helping you, for example, with our comparison of the best Internet offers - and let your new ISP take care of the termination.
In concrete terms, if you opt for this solution, you will not be required to send a termination letter to SFR. However, this will not exempt you from termination fees and procedures to return your equipment. We will come back to this later in this guide.
But there are many situations where you don't want to change operator, just cancel. In case of departure abroad, for example. Or if you are about to move into a home where there is already an Internet connection. There are also situations where you will not be able to benefit from number portability, in particular in the case of a move from one region to another.
In all these situations, you will have no choice: it will be necessary to formalize your decision to terminate your subscription with SFR.
This must be done by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt, to be sent to the following address: SFR SERVICE CLIENT – TSA 10101 69947 LYON Cedex 20. Your termination letter must mention your contact details, your subscriber number and request termination of the contract. You can also greatly simplify your life by using a specialized service such as Terminate.com or letter-resiliation.com.
You can end your contract at any time. Please note, however, that the minimum notice to terminate your SFR Internet subscription is 10 days from receipt of your letter. You can also ask for a longer period, so that it coincides with your planned moving date, for example. Also note that you can cancel your termination request as long as it is not effective.
Finally, if you change operator with number portability, but still want to cover your back by sending a cancellation letter, be careful! Above all, do not do this before the commissioning of your new Internet access: you risk having your SFR access cut off before the new supplier has taken over. Always annoying, especially in telework.
Whatever your situation - simple termination or change of operator with number retention - the deal is the same. SFR will charge you termination fees. More specifically, service closing costs, which amount to 49 euros.
In addition, if you cancel your SFR Internet subscription before the end of the commitment period provided for in the contract, there will be penalties:
That being said, there are a number of specific cases in which you can terminate the Internet free of charge at SFR. These cases are specified in the general conditions of sale of the operator. "Legitimate reasons" which give the right to a waiver of the closing costs of 49 euros and any monthly payments remaining due until the end of the commitment:
Please note, if you request termination from SFR for a legitimate reason, you must accompany your request with corresponding proof.
Finally, you can also cancel your SFR box offer free of charge if the operator changes its general conditions of sale (price increase, etc.). You will then have four months to do so. Another scenario: the free termination of an SFR Internet subscription is possible if the provider is unable to provide you with the service for which you have subscribed and is responsible for it.
Good to know: if you cancel your SFR Internet subscription and do not meet one of these criteria, you will not be able to avoid cancellation fees. But good news: your new Internet provider can take care of these expenses! We explain who reimburses what, how much, and how in our guide to Internet Termination Fee Reimbursement.
You have followed the steps detailed above and that's it, your SFR Internet subscription is canceled for good. But it's not over. The countdown is now on: you have 20 days from the official termination date to return your equipment. SFR box, decoder, but also any other equipment or accessory made available by the operator: remote control, CPL kit, hard disk... And it is better not to miss it, because penalties are provided for in the event of delay, non-return, or damaged material. Good news, however: you will not have to pay the cost of returning your equipment.
Once the termination of your SFR internet subscription has been recorded, you will receive a letter or email acknowledging your request. The operator then sends you a second email or letter including your return label. The latter allows you to return your SFR box and your TV decoder free of charge: no shipping costs will be at your expense.
Good to know: if you have not received your SFR return slip by email or post, you can download and print it directly from the SFR operator's website using your password.
Once you have received your free return label, you can unplug and collect all the equipment to be returned. You must then pack your equipment in a single suitable box. In addition to your box and your TV decoder, don't forget to add cables, power supplies, filters and the remote control. Be careful not to forget anything, otherwise you will have to pay the following penalties (as of February 16, 2021):
SFR Internet Box | Penalty for non-return (€) | Other equipment | Penalty for non- restitution (€) |
---|---|---|---|
SFR Box | 60 | Mini TV Decoder | 150 |
Box Plus de SFR | 60 | Decoder Evolution / Decoder Plus | 150 |
SFR Box 8 | 149 | SFR Box 8 TV | 199 |
THD BOX / 4K Fiber Box | 299 | SFR HomeSound | 169 |
THD WiFi AC Modem | 99 | SFR HomeSound Premium | 349 |
Box 4G+ | 149 | CPL power supply | 50 |
You must drop off your parcel with your SFR box, the TV decoder and all the accessories, at a PickUp network relay point (Chronopost) or at a post office near you. And thanks to your return label stuck on the package, you return your equipment free of charge to SFR. Don't forget to have the other part of the return slip signed when you drop it off. This is indeed your proof of deposit to be kept.
After having sent it back to SFR box, decoder and other accessories, the operator will automatically refund your security deposit, if you had paid one at the time of your subscription. This refund of security deposit is made within 10 days of the return of your equipment. Another indication, the method of payment used for the reimbursement of the latter is the one you had adopted for the payment of your SFR box invoices.
The internet subscription is terminated, the equipment returned, but you may still have one point to settle: how to keep your address email @sfr.fr?
Or not, by the way: if you didn't use this e-mail address before, you probably won't use it after leaving SFR. In this case, nothing to do: the reception of messages will be blocked after six months without action on your part. And after one year of inactivity, your SFR email address will be automatically deleted.
If, on the other hand, you use the messaging service of the operator in the red square, what happens to your SFR email after termination? Firstly, on the legal side: operators are obliged to let former customers access the electronic messaging associated with their subscription for a period of 6 months after the termination of their contract. In practice, however, SFR goes further: the operator allows you to keep the email address @sfr.fr as long as it is active. That is to say as long as you use it, even beyond the 6 month period imposed by law, as many years as you really want.
And to continue using your SFR email address after cancellation, nothing special to do. Even when you are no longer a customer of the operator in the red square, all you have to do is go to webmail.sfr.fr and enter your usual usernames and passwords. Alternative: the SFR Mail application for smartphone and tablet, always with the same codes.
