Free Internet termination: easier by changing operator

There are two ways to end your Freebox internet contract. The first is simply to change Internet provider. If you ask, during this change, to keep your landline number, the matter will be easily resolved. It is indeed your new supplier who will terminate your Free line. Proceeding in this way is not only simpler, but above all more than recommended. Indeed, imagine that, on a whim, you cancel your Freebox subscription. Then, in a second step, subscribe to a new box offer from a competitor. Not only will it then be impossible for you to keep your landline number, but you also risk losing access to the Internet between the shutdown of your Freebox services and the commissioning of your new access. The interest of the operation is therefore twofold: to ensure the continuity of your Internet services and to simplify your life. Which doesn't mean that it won't cost you anything, nor that you won't have to do anything else to cancel Free, as we'll see next.

Finally, what about situations where you don't cancel your Freebox to change operator? Where when you can't or don't want to keep your number? In all these cases, the Free subscriber will have to take care of his termination himself, starting with an obligatory passage: notify his departure to the operator.

How to terminate your Free Internet contract?

This must be done by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt, to be sent to the following address: FREEBOX Termination - PubliDispatch BP 40090 91003 EVRY CEDEX. Your letter must specify your surname, first name, line number or subscriber ID, and explicitly request the termination of your box contract.

At Free, as with other operators, it is possible to terminate your contract at any time. But the deactivation of your Free line will be done in a very precise schedule. You will be able to choose between two dates for the shutdown of your Freebox services:

Note that you have the option of canceling your termination request as long as it is not effective, by logging into your Freebox subscriber area.

However you proceed, however, we advise you not to send your cancellation letter before having completed another step: a call to 32 44. That is to say the customer service of Free: this is indeed an obligatory step in order to be able to start the procedure for returning your Freebox and other accessories. A step that should not be overlooked to avoid costly penalties, as we will see later.

Free termination costs: it's chargeable but not necessarily

There are therefore two ways to terminate your Freebox subscription. But whichever one you choose, the bill will be the same: the end of your Internet Free contract will incur termination fees. Amount of pain: 49 euros - this is the same price with almost all operators. And that's not all.

Indeed, if you can cancel your Freebox at any time, there are some that will cost you more than others. In the event of termination of the contract before the end of your commitment period, you will not escape penalties. For about three years, Free has been offering Freebox offers with a 12-month commitment (Freebox Revolution and Freebox Mini 4K in particular). If you leave before these 12 months, you will still have to pay the remaining subscription months due. And be careful: these monthly payments are calculated on the price excluding promotion, and not on the reduced price offered the first year. Example, for the termination of a Freebox Revolution before the end of the year of commitment, the monthly payments remaining to be honored will be 44.99 euros, and not 19.99 euros. It is therefore better not to rush before terminating its Free offer.

That being said, there are a number of specific cases in which you can terminate Internet free of charge at Free. These cases are specified in the general conditions of sale of the operator. "Legitimate reasons" which give the right to a waiver of the closing costs of 49 euros and any monthly payments remaining due until the end of the commitment:

Finally, you can also cancel your Freebox offer free of charge if the operator changes its general conditions of sale (price increase, etc.). You will then have four months to do so, from the notification by the operator.

How to return your Freebox and other equipment to Free?

Canceling your Internet Free subscription is one thing. Returning your equipment to the operator is another. And to do this, there is a procedure to follow scrupulously, whether you have simply canceled or changed operator with fixed number portability. Because once your end of Freebox contract has been registered, you will only have 15 days to return your equipment to Free, all your equipment. Freebox modem (or server), decoder (or player), remote control, Wi-Fi repeater, fiber box, Freeplugs... It is therefore preferable to take care of this step when preparing to cancel your subscription Freebox, rather than waiting for the operator to tell you that your request has been registered.

1 - Call 32 44 to obtain the return slip

To return all your equipment to Free, you will need to use a return label. And to obtain this return label, you will need to contact customer service on 32 44. The latter will then send you an email containing all the instructions for returning your equipment, as well as the label to be printed to affix it to your package. feedback. You can also find this voucher in your Free customer area. It will allow you to return your Freebox and the rest of your equipment free of charge.

2 - Prepare your Freebox package (without forgetting anything)

Once your label has been received, you can disconnect and collect all the equipment to be returned to Free. You will need to pack them in a single suitable box. In addition to your Freebox and your TV decoder, don't forget to add all the accessories: cables, power supplies, remote control, fiber box. Be careful not to forget anything, otherwise you will have to pay the following penalties:

3 - Return your equipment to Free on time

Once your equipment has been fully packed, all you have to do is affix the return label to your package and bring it to one of the drop-off points offered. And this without delay: in the event of return of Freebox equipment after the deadline, Free will apply the fixed penalties detailed above.

4 - After returning your Freebox

If you had paid a security deposit when you subscribed, this will be refunded to you by Free within 10 days of returning your Freebox.

Warning: if you have subscribed to the Freebox Delta offer with Player Free / Devialet, note that the latter equipment is your property. If you cancel your Freebox Delta offer, you will therefore only have to send Free the Delta modem, and not the decoder / connected speaker: this one is yours!

After termination: how to keep your Free email address?

The internet subscription is terminated, the equipment returned, but you may still have one point to settle: how to keep your email address @ free.fr? Indeed, the law requires Internet access providers to allow their former customers to access the messaging linked to their subscription for at least 6 months after termination. Good news: a subscriber will be able to keep his Free mailbox after its termination, beyond the regulatory six months, and continue to use it as long as he wishes, at no cost.

You will nevertheless have to make sure to create a new Free account with "free access" (that is to say, independent of any subscription) in order to attach the email address formerly linked to your Freebox subscription. To do this, after creating a main Free account with "free access", you just need to log in using your credentials. Then, in the "My subscription" and "My information" tab, you must click on "Link an eMail account". You must then indicate the name of the Free email account to be linked and validated.
