As we approach the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, we can expect several appearances or solutions made from the 3D printing unveiled, as was the case for the Tokyo Olympic Games which took place from July 23to August 8, 2021.

The first to be talked about for this sporting event is an advertisement that has recently been broadcast by the BBC (British Broadcast Corporation).Called "Extreme by Nature", the communication company reveals a 40-second trailer which evokes the difficult conditions facing the Olympians thanks to a mixture of Stop Motion animation, 3D printed sets and camera effectshidden.

"I really admire people who have the will to push the limits of things," says Balázs Simon, who made the trailer through the production company Blinkink."What better example for that than the Olympic Games?"Especially winter games, where athletes compete in environments so different from our usual experiences. When I was approached for this project, the biggest question for me was how to portray and be up to this dedication ... We wanted to represent them emerging in the ice and snow and ending up getting out of it.»»

The video, which may seem generated by computer at first, has 3D printed accessories created by 3m Buckley Innovation Centeret of miniature models produced by Scalemodstudios.Even if no information was given on the process of making these accessories, Simon said in an interview with Creative Review that the creation of this film was a real challenge.

"My favorite task was to find a solution for camera work in snow scenes. So that the spectator can feel the efforts of the characters directly, I wanted him to be as close to them as possible: an excellent example of the way in which an apparently simple creative decision can turn into a large network of intertwined technical challenges.»»

The team's solution was a complex mixture of 3D printed scenes and camera movements. « Nous avons commencé à penser aux caméras différemment : certains de leurs mouvements seraient directement « imprimés»», et d’autres seraient des mouvements réels de la plate-forme de contrôle« , explique Simon.

The reduced space of 3D printed cubes has tightened the environment in which the Olympic athletes play, expressing their speed and their sense of movement.

Even if it does not mention China, the host country, this advertisement is the first to reveal an appropriation of 3D printing for the cinema and sport industries and we are impatient to discover more.
