The new coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 65,272 people worldwide since its appearance in December in China, according to a report compiled by AFP from official sources on Sunday at 11:00 GMT. More than 1,206,480 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 190 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic.
However, this number of diagnosed cases only reflects a fraction of the actual number of contaminations, with a large number of countries now only testing cases requiring hospital treatment. Of these cases, at least 233,300 are now considered cured.
Italy, which recorded its first death linked to the coronavirus at the end of February, is the country most affected in terms of the number of deaths, with 15,362 deaths for 124,632 cases. 20,996 people are considered cured by the Italian authorities. After Italy, the most affected countries are Spain with 12,418 deaths for 130,759 cases, the United States with 8,503 deaths (312,245 cases), France with 7,560 deaths (89,953 cases), and the United Kingdom with 4,313 dead (41,903 cases).
China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao), where the epidemic began at the end of December, counted a total of 81,669 cases (30 new between Saturday and Sunday), including 3,329 deaths (3 new), and 76,964 cures. In number of cases, the United States is the most affected country, with 312,245 officially recorded contaminations, including 8,503 deaths and 15,021 cured.
Europe totaled Sunday at 11:00 GMT 47,093 deaths for 642,330 cases, the United States and Canada 8,747 deaths (326,117 cases), Asia 4,172 deaths (117,571 cases), the Middle East 3,779 deaths (74,670 cases ), Latin America and the Caribbean 1,052 deaths (30,539 cases), Africa 388 deaths (8,578 cases), and Oceania 41 deaths (6,675 cases).
