Some key dates

iTélé, the old version of CNews

The iTélé channel (initially iTélévision) was created in October 1999, originally to compete with LCI. It is initially broadcast on CanalSat. It was during the September 11 attacks in New York that the iTélé signal was broadcast for the first time free of charge. The channel then applied to the CSA (Conseil Supérieur de l'Audiovisuel) to obtain a frequency on free DTT, which was allocated to it in October 2005. In 2008, then 2013, the channel changed its visual identity and became an essential channel. of the French audiovisual landscape. It serves in particular as an incubator and nursery of talents for many journalists, such as Léa Salamé, Aymeric Caron, Maya Lauquet, Samuel Etienne, Thomas Touroud, or Marie Drucker.

The turning point of 2016

In September 2016, iTélé is far behind BFM TV in terms of audience: it has only 0.8% of PDA against 2.1% for BFM TV. It should be noted that in 2016, iTélé must also deal with the arrival of two other free continuous news channels: LCI (which cumulates 0.3% of PDA in September 2016) and France Info.

In October 2016, a strike movement that lasted more than 31 days (it is the longest strike within a private channel) caused a lot of ink to flow. In question: the editorial choices of the management, which are not in agreement with the editorial staff of the channel. This virulent strike triggered an unprecedented wave of departures since a hundred employees left the chain.

The birth of CNews

In 2017, iTélé became CNews and took on new ambitions. It is thus part of the galaxy of Vincent Bolloré's audiovisual group, alongside C8 (formerly D8) and CStar. From now on, the chain has for slogan “CNews, the chain of decryption and opinions”. Its editorial line is perceived as rather politicized and marked on the right, due to the choices of columnists and guests which have sparked some controversy in public opinion. But on the side of journalists, we defend a non-partisan and neutral approach. It is often compared to the American channel Fox News.

To knowIn addition to being a news channel, CNews is also a free newspaper. This newspaper is distributed in several cities such as Paris, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice, Toulouse and Strasbourg.
