It had been in the cards for a few weeks, it is now official: fifteen video protection cameras will be deployed in Brest. All that remains is to obtain the green light from the municipal council, which meets on December 9.

This will be deployed in “nerve” places, details the prefect of Finistère, Philippe Mahé, who does not wish to give details, however. Some of these cameras will be mobile and will not focus on a particular location. The others will be deployed in the city center and in certain districts, such as Pontanezen and Keredern.

“The State is everywhere at home”

These cameras will be operated by the national police. "They will be used in the establishment of evidence and to anticipate disturbances to public order", welcomes the prefect.

François Cuillandre, the mayor of Brest, signs this agreement with the State, after having been on the brakes for several years. "I have always refused controversy on this subject, but I do not know any mayor who would not be interested in this question", he says today. He continues: “I never considered myself a little President of the Republic. The state is everywhere at home. »

It highlights "the fundamental right" to security and ensures that "local authorities have an important role to play in this context".

Who funds? “Mostly” the State, replies the prefect. Up to how much? He doesn't want to elaborate. How much does it cost ? No response either.

It also promises that other CCTV cameras after the experimental phase of this device. How much ? Mystery.

The deployment of video protection in Brest is part of an agreement signed between the City and the State. Several other measures are included, with the aim of reducing crime, in particular drug trafficking and violence against women.
